Guide to Malaga 08 (Bilingual Spanish/English) |
|
Review: |
The earliest tourist guide books were born in the wake of the “Grand Tour de la Mediterranée” and, along with the “Travel Handbooks”,
were of great utility to real travellers and dreamers alike, to all those in love with the idea of journeying to unknown lands,
even though they may have been unable to do so. For a tourist guide book is, in effect, a potential trip, and it is with its reading,
not the plane, train or car, that a journey truly begins.
For travellers have always needed companions. One of the first romantic travellers known to have visited Malaga, Wilhelm von
Humboldt, was able to seek out exotic dance in the popular districts of Malaga city in the late XVIII century once he had found
someone to accompany him. The same was true of William Jacob shortly afterwards in the Sierra de las Nieves. They and all who
followed would later capture their experiences in print, highlighting those locations that had most surprised them.
This very same task is undertaken year after year by SER in Malaga with the release of its Guide Book in a world where travel
has ceased to be the preserve of a small elite and Malaga is no longer an exotic, uncharted territory but one of the most popular
tourist destinations in the world.
Being one of the leading lights in a sector makes it even more essential that a destination should have top-quality guide books
at its disposal to ensure that its visitors discover all the quality and beauty of specific enclaves, to provide accurate, detailed
answers to their queries, to draw them into the atmosphere in such a way that after initially feeling curiosity for our area, they
end up loving it as if it were their own.
I hope and trust that this edition of the Guide to Malaga will meet with the same success enjoyed in previous years, thus playing
a key role in ensuring not only that the year 2008 sees the continued and growing success of the sector for the benefit of Malaga,
Andalusia and Spain alike, but also that all who visit us are able to fulfil the dream that they come in search of.
